To begin the year, we talked about the Charter SLO's and how they help us in school. We discussed why they are important and how we can achieve them every day. To test our skills, knowledge and understanding of the SLO's, we split up into our house teams (Lanta, Samet and Phuket) and were given the challenge to build a tower of our choice.
We needed Critical Thinking skills in order to come up with ideas to share. We had to use Effective Communication to get our ideas across, as well as hear others people's. We needed Social Responsibility to make sure everyone had a turn, and had something to do. And we achieved Academic Success together by working as a team to build our structures!
Well done to all of the students who showed great skills, knowledge and understanding of the Charter SLO's!
Today we have been on an amazing trip to Ancient City, in Samut Prakarn!
We were able to see many sights in this wonderful outdoor museum, which is shaped in the form of Thailand, only smaller! We took a mini-tour all around Thailand and saw many different exhibits which are scaled-down versions of the real monuments, temples and statues; and we learned a lot more about Thai culture along the way!
It was hot and sticky, but we all had a great time and the children represented Charter very well, making it a great day and a fantastic end to the school year!

In English, we have been learning about Myths and Legends. We read the story of Odysseus and Polyphemus, an ancient Greek myth set in the Mediterranean.
Odysseus was a soldier who had landed on the island of Sicily with his crew of men, tired from the Trojan War and looking for food, water and shelter for the night. They found a cave to take cover in when they stumbled across a giant cyclops by the name of Polyphemus!
Polyphemus saw the men and rolled a great boulder in the entrance of the cave to block the men from escaping. Then with a huge swipe of his giant hand, he scooped up some of the men and ate them for his dinner! The men were obviously angry and poked the great cyclops in the eye with a red-hot spear, blinding him instantly.
Later on, the men managed to escape underneath the cyclops's giant sheep as he was counting them out the next morning - but it was not all over yet! Odysseus and his crew had not realised that Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon, God of the Sea! Poseidon cursed the men with furious sea-storms for the next 10 years, making them unable to return home.

To kick off our final topic for the year, Temples, Tombs and Treasures, we embarked on an Ancient Egyptian-themed treasure hunt! Children worked together in their house teams to locate and crack a series of clues written in hieroglyphics (a form of ‘alphabet’ that was used in Ancient Egypt), and locate a hidden Ancient Egyptian artefact in the school! Howard Carter himself would be proud of our super-sleuthing detectives!
The children had a great time locating and solving the clues and it was encouraging to see teams working together so well. Congratulations to Samet, who were first to crack all the codes and bring back their Ancient Egyptian to class almost safe and sound! The children later learned how to write their names in hieroglyphics, and then wrote secret messages to a mystery partner in the class which they needed to solve to find the message, and whom it was from!
A great start to the new term and our new topic! We can’t wait to see what other mysteries we can uncover…

We hope you enjoyed the show and I'm sure you will agree that all of the children did exceptionally well to remember their lines, and both spoke and performed brilliantly! Year 6C came to visit 3P this week to read with the students for World Literature Week 'reading buddy' time, which everyone really enjoyed! The Year 6's read beautifully to their younger schoolmates and the Year 3's did a wonderful job of listening to their buddies. This was a lovely time to enjoy reading and literature in general, and I'm sure we're all looking forward to next year's 'reading buddy' time!
To conclude our last topic for term 2.1, How Humans Work, we made our own delicious pizzas! We chose from a range of different food groups to create a yummy combination of toppings, which not only looked great but tasted amazing too!
Both Year 3 classes got together on Monday for some Measuring Madness! This week, we have been learning about volume and capacity, so we went to the art room to investigate some different containers and estimate what their capacity might be.
So how did we check what the capacities were? Simple! We poured the containers into a measuring jug of about the same size or greater, and used the scales on the jugs to find the capacity of the containers we investigated!
We have been enjoying our new topic, How Humans Work. Like the title says, we have been learning all about our bodies.
We began with a jigsaw with a difference! First, we tried to assemble a human skeleton - without any clues! We got some very funny looking skeletons, the most tricky bone to find a home for? The shoulder blades!
Next, we worked in groups to draw an outline of the human body, then, we tried to put all the organs in the right place. This was even trickier! Some organs we have two of, while some are hidden by others!
The human body really is an amazing machine!
Another year and another Primary Quiz! As always, it was a lot fun and everyone contributed and cooperated well. Congratulations to Phuket who are the Primary Quiz Champions again, narrowly beating Lanta by just 1 point! Well done to everybody, and better luck next year, Lanta and Samet!
To conclude our 'Saving the World' topic and our learning on deforestation and conservation, Year 3 made their very own animations using the stop-start method and the iMotion app on the iPads. Children collaborated in pairs to build their colourful sets and props, then 'filmed' their movies by painstakingly capturing each frame. After all the frames were put in place, we simply changed the frame rate then exported the project and 'ta-daa' ... our movies were made!
We hope you enjoy watching them as much as we did making them! Perhaps this will inspire you to make your own animations at home!
STEM Week 2018-19 was another great success this year and, again, was a favourite among all of the Key Stage 2 students! A big thank you to the parents, families and carers who came to the STEM Week Show on Friday - pictures will be available on the School's Facebook page shortly.
In Mr Porter's class, students we challenged with making a sculpture using only the materials they were provided with, and of course their imaginations! Students were divided into houses, with Year 3's and 4's working side by side. As well as making a clever sculpture, they needed to think about the SLOs as they worked together. Students voted on members of their team who displayed great use of the outcomes.
But that wasn't the only voting happening! Parents, families, carers, and Upper Key Stage 2 students were invited to vote on the most appealing sculpture. There were all sorts of wonderful designs on display which is a credit to the students who were able to work together and produce an attractive finished product! Congratulations to Nana B (Y4), Pancake (Y4), Rose, (Y4), Malcolm (Y3D), and Aron (Y3P) who received the most votes for their popular 'Party Pig!' There will be some stars coming your way!
Well done to all of the students in Key Stage 2, especially Year 3P, who earned lots of stars for a wide range of SLOs throughout the week! And thanks again to everyone who attended the end of week show, the children really appreciated your support!
During our Brainwave topic, we have been learning about a wide range of new concepts and skills about our brains and how they work. It has been fascinating learning about the evolution of the brain over millions of years, and diving deep into our minds to see how we learn, and how we can train our brains. We learned that the brain is a lot like a muscle - we can make it stronger by using it in the right ways, like practising a skill!
We looked at neurons and talked about how they help our bodies function, particularly in the brain. We participated in an activity to demonstrate the way neurons work and interact, by using string to represent neurons. We made 'connections' by finding similar interests in the class, much like the connections in the brain which become stronger with training. We also found out that by not practising a skill, those connections become weaker over time - much like our muscles. This showed us the importance of always keeping our minds active and keeping our skills sharp by practising them regularly - a very timely reminder to start the year!
To kick off the start of Year 3, 2018-19, we familiarised ourselves with the Charter Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, or the 'SLOs'. You will have seen this poster about them around the school, which drives our school's mission and vision.
We discussed what they meant to us, and how we can achieve the outcomes. The children separated into their house teams (Lanta, Phuket and Samet) and were then told they were to take part in a tower building challenge! We discussed how the SLOs related to being successful in the task, then they competed to build the tallest self-standing structure using building blocks and the Charter SLOs! The winners were Lanta, who built the winning tower, narrowly beating Phuket. We came together to talk about how the SLOs helped us to achieve a common goal, and how they can guide us through our learning. Well done to all of the teams who demonstrated a fantastic understanding of the SLOs!
